AI Camera

AI Camera

A 0→1 exploration of what Facetune becomes when AI moves from editing a photo to helping take it. Not another generation tool: a camera that understands what you meant to capture and closes the gap between the moment you got and the one you wanted, without asking you to type a prompt.

Full Figma

Someone blinked. The better face was the frame before. The moment already passed. Editing can clean a photo. It cannot get that moment back. So the product moved into the camera: help you get the photo you meant to take, before you leave the shoot.

Instead of exposing generative AI as more tools, the product would understand photographic intent: A candid, most photogenic version of you. Like having a personal photographer who directs you and helps you look your best.

Will people trust AI to reinterpret a personal photo if the result still feels like them?

Chin up just a little. Soften your eyes. Look past me, into the light. Now back to the lens, slowly. Shift your weight to the back foot. Drop your shoulder. Turn a quarter toward me. Hold that, don't smile yet. Okay, a real smile, not a camera smile. Laugh at something, anything. Hands out of your pockets. Touch your hair like you mean it. Step into the light. One more step. Stay there. Tilt your head the other way. Eyes down, then up when I say. Now. Breathe out. Don't pose, just stand. Walk toward me, slow. Stop on three. One, two, three. Look over your shoulder. Find the window light. Move into the shade. Chin down, eyes up. Relax your jaw. Uncross your arms. Lean on the wall like it's yours. Sit, then settle. Cross your ankles. Pull your shoulders back. Make space with your elbow. Hand on your hip, lightly. Both hands free. Look left. Hold. And back. Catch the flare. Wait for the wind. Again, same spot. Closer. I need your eyes. Think of someone you like. Forget I'm here for a second. Perfect, stay in that feeling. Turn into the golden light. Face the neon. Let the backlight wrap you. Half in shadow is fine. Full body, don't crop yourself. Come in tighter. From above, look up at me. I'm low, look down a touch. In motion, keep walking. Freeze. Quiet face. Confident, not stiff. Unposed is the pose. One more candid. Last one, make it count. You're done, that was good. One more candid. Last one, make it count. You're done, that was good. Chin up just a little. Soften your eyes. A Figma Make prototype helped us to test the UX early in the loop: a camera that takes bursts of photos of you like a photographer on set, without asking you to type a prompt.

The goal was proof of feeling, not polish: could this interaction earn trust before we spend real engineering time?

Figma Make, 2025

Once the feeling held, we moved to benchmarking the results and researching prompt engineering: what to ask of the model so a directed burst still came back looking like you.

How does it make me feel when I get a bad result?

How do we predict something so subjective like a user's perception of themselves? (It's not exactly me, but I'm ok with that.)

Considering monetization for this amount of burst photos.

How can we make the long wait of generations into a fun experience?

01

One Tap

Compress the intelligence into the smallest possible interaction: a shutter button, and the habit of tapping until the perfect shot is captured.

02

Trust

For personal photos, invisible AI usually outperforms impressive AI. If you notice the changes right away, we've altered too much. That often means we can't easily explain the change that will enhance the photo.

03

Controllability

Give people control, but only after you gain trust. Speak in outcomes (cinematic, warm, candid), not model parameters or text fields that make users think.

04

Fun to Fine

Support the whole range, from playful generation to nearly invisible improvement.

User testing, 2025

This project became a top-priority objective for Q1 2026 and shipped as a live feature, validated through more than eight consecutive A/B tests.

By the final iteration, roughly 25% of all photos exported from Facetune came through this experience.
